Isnt that the guy from “the good place”. For me I loved this movie because of the slow burn, gradually making you more and more paranoid and disturbed as characters try and rationalize what is happening around them. We're not meant to feel like Florence Pugh's character is empowered at the end. However, I think it succeeds in making you empathize with her. This film is about a cult who preys on vulnerable people, and her character was well set up as being vulnerable, through her poor relationship choices and her need for someone to care about her after the loss of her family. The characters do a lot of poor decision making, but at the same time they're fucked up on drugs the whole time. For me, this film puts me in the position of someone experiencing a bad trip on a drug they don't quite understand, and the horror of that helplessness and incomprehensibility. The costumes, sound design, cinematic imagery and acting in this film were all brilliant, and the drawn out nature of the Directors cut work extremely well, I think, as a horror movie. Not as a slasher or anything like that, but as a film that gradually and wholly fills you with fear. But, of course, horror is subjective.

I liked the alternate ending where it turns out her boyfriend had a brother high up in the military and hearing about the disappearances uses satellite imagery to discover what happened and then sends a stealth Apache helicopter drone and scorches the earth of the entire commune leaving nothing left and killing everyone. I mean everyone. Then he quips, Ragnarock bitches and the Swedes pay no mind because they are such a progressive folk. The End. I'm not familiar with the child in a horror film that has an allergy that will factor in the plot later cliche.

This movie is possibly my favourite movie of all time. Horror has turned into a shitshow and people have become convinced that jump scares denote how scary a horror movie is. That is complete bullshit it denotes how fucking lazy it is. Movies like the Conjuring and Annabelle and all those shitty others like the Gallows, Happy Death Day, etc. arent real horror they are jump scare movies. Midsommar, Hereditary, The Lighthouse and The Witch are genuine horrors that fill you with unease and fear. Dont rely on jump scares at all. They are directorial masterpieces and I hope thousands of future directors use them as inspiration as I will. They are a breath of fresh air and movies I can actually get invested in as I know its not going to have a bullshit ending where everything is right and okay and the good guys banish the spirit. I want unpredictability because modern horror is boring and its dying. Directors like Ari Aster and Robert Eggers are the saviours of the genre. I could go into depth of how you missed the point on almost everything. The themes of family and community, the detrimental mindset of the anthropologist at times and the other themes shown throughout the movie but you probably get those comments on here all the time. This is a movie that sure isnt for everyone but is new, its different and its trying not to be those fucking terrible mainstream horrors. And I love that for it and I aspire to write and direct something even half as good as Midsommar.

I like that they're all aware that they've created a monster. Im taking away the sin for the 1.5 minutes of crying. That was actually heartbreaking and made my cold dead heart feel something. I was born and raised by people who were recruited into the cult so for many years I knew little outside of its parameters of thought. While it was a bible-based cult, the tactics were all the same. At the time of its inception in the 80s, nearly all of the recruits were Gen-X teenagers from dysfunctional and abusive households. It was no wonder people like my parents were so susceptible to believing the cult when they were told how evil the world outside was. Anyone looking in would think we were just another suburban church with a warm and welcoming community with many finding great happiness and love upon joining. They thought they found their happy ending. Until shit would get real. Real fast. By the 90s most of those teens grew up and had families within the cult. Soon the very childhood dysfunction and abuse they sought to escape was reframed as child training to be further perpetuated. The very trauma that compelled them to seek out the cult continued in the next lot of children. The slightest things could be utilised by those in charge to inflict extreme sanctions upon adult and child alike. There were public humiliations, deliverances, relationships forced apart, forced marriage, and excommunications alike. This was no happy ending. Time outside the cult has shown me that while those years were certainly my worst, there's still a lot left to be desired with how things are in the world right now. We need to continue the fight for things like equality, better grassroots communities, healthier communication and emotional expression being championed, a sense of freedom of individuality that allows people to contribute greatly within their communities rather than the selfish individualism so often pushed, and a vigilance that prevents harmful actions being perpetuated in the name of belief. Society's flaws drive vulnerable people into the arms of abusive structures, be it a romantic partner, toxic friendship, or a cult. Continuing such a toxic cycle does not make for a happy ending.
